Good Feng Shui and Shaklee

Our friend Tracy Miller is a very well respected Feng Shui consultant. Feng Shui is the ancient Chinese art of placement. The goal of Feng Shui is to achieve harmony, comfort, and balance, first in one’s environment and then in one’s life. Feng Shui helps us support the flow of energy in our lives to augment our health and prosperity. Tracy’s good at what she does and shares a bit of her knowledge through her weekly Feng Shui e-mail tips. Recently her tip of the week was about reducing our toxic load on the environment (and she gives Shaklee a plug!) Here’s her tip:

One way we can help ourselves stay both healthy and happy is to make sure that our environments carry as little toxic load as possible. In feng shui we must remain aware of what materials and products we are using . We want to stay as close to the natural flow of energy as possible. So much of what we buy today is loaded with chemicals and preservatives that our bodies just don't know how to process it all. This issue becomes especially important if our health is already compromised.

Here are a few tips on how to reduce the toxic load in your environment:

1. Get some fresh air.

Whenever possible, keep a window cracked somewhere in the house. Even a little fresh air coming in is better than none. If you are running an exhaust fan in the kitchen or bathroom, it's great to bring that fresh air in at the same time. Keep a window cracked in the car as well. And in the office if you can.

2. Use non-toxic cleaning products whenever possible.

I have found that there is very little in the house that cannot be cleaned with a mixture of baking soda, salt, essential oils and/or borax. I have even used hydrogen peroxide to take stains off of ceramic surfaces. Vinegar is another great cleaning agent. There are many books and websites out there that tell us how to make these non-toxic products ourselves.

If you do need something more powerful, use "green" (environmentally safe) products. Two companies I know of that sell these types of products are Shaklee and Seventh Generation (available at Whole Foods and other health oriented retail shops).

3. Are you painting?

If you've ever painted a room in your house, you know how the fumes affect you for sometime afterward. Your allergies worsen, you get a headache or have respiratory system problems.
You may be interested to know that the Sherwin Williams Company makes a paint called Harmony that has a very low organic compound base (called Low VOC). Check this product out--I recommend it.
